Literacy Centre Ideas (K-2)

Structured Literacy centers are an essential part of any classroom that aims to develop students' reading, writing and spelling skills.

These centers provide a space for students to engage in independent or small group activities that cater to their individual abilities.

When implemented correctly, literacy centers allow for differentiated instruction, promote student engagement, and foster independence.

SoR Center of the Day - Sight Word Memory Method

Learning Goal: to memorize how to read and spell irregular words (words that do not follow spelling patterns - e.g., the, again)

Materials: index cards, markers, word list, zip lock bag with student names written on it

How to Implement:

  1. Each student will select a bag with their name on it (each student will be learning different irregular words)

  2. Students will take out 1 word at a time and complete the sight word memory method

  3. Place the word back in their bag and choose the next word

  4. Repeat until all words have been completed

Extension: Find a partner and quiz each other
